Spring internet cleaning

I decided it's time to spruce up this blog.

First of all, I'll start using it again! I thought long and hard about why I don't use it and I finally realized it's because I always feel like what I write has to be revolutionary. I put too much pressure on myself for it to be interesting and unique. But that's the exact thing inhibiting me from creating interesting things. Every time I write I feel like it's manufactured and blah.
Then I discovered that this is exactly why I haven't choreographed a solid dance phrase in over a year and a half- I'm afraid it won't be spectacular enough. I'm afraid that I'll be disappointed in myself- in the work. But the fact is, the only thing I've been disappointed about is my lack of producing anything dance related. So come March 2013- tomorrow!- this is all going to change. I'm acknowledging that something is better than nothing. I will only get better at creating if I practice it all the time, without fear of it being awful.
I knew a professor who improvised in her tiny NYC apartment living room for 30 minutes a day. She filmed the whole thing and then took only a 45 second clip to showcase on her blog. It got her creative juices flowing, her body moving, and gave her a catalog of her own movement had she wanted to replicate it in a work.
I won't be doing this exactly, but I will be recording tiny pieces every day and post them without editing (camera or audio-wise) for feedback. This will be my way of hosting something similar to the infamous Muhlenberg dance showings, but in the most informal way possible as can still be useful. Hopefully, other dancers in my situation (aka NOT dancing after college....yet), will jump in and we can all go to bed much happier.

In non-dance related news, Jesse and I are in Baja California, Mexico. We're staying here for a month with some other poker players, right on the ocean shore. The waves almost wash right up to the bottom of the house! We came here so I can put in lots of volume on poker sites- another pursuit of mine. But as soon as we got here, all I could see were amazing spots for choreography. After this month is over, I will be heading straight to Austin, TX for a dtx rehearsal/performance for two weeks. So here goes nothing. Tomorrow will be the first of my re-entering the dance world for good. It is a lot harder after college, with nobody telling you when your creativity "has to be turned in" or when your work must be completed by or even any dancers relying on you for movement. But I know that I'll be much happier with even a tiny dose of dance a day, and maybe this will become my portfolio for something bigger in the future...
